Biographical note

Mário Jorge Torres is professor emeritus at the University of Lisbon School of Arts and Humanities, where he lectured on North-American literature and culture, North-American cinema, English cinema, Portuguese cinema, film history, film analysis, and film melodrama. He was a film critic for Público . As a member of the Centre for Comparative Studies he has collaborated in multiple research projects and coordinated the project “(Re)written on the wind – melodrama among the arts”. He is presently a collaborator of “RIAL – Reality and Imagination in Art and Literature”. He is the author of Manoel de Oliveira (Público/Cahiers du cinéma, 2008), and he organized Não Vi o Livro, mas Li o Filme (Húmus, 2008) and co-organized O Concerto das Artes (Campo das Letras, 2007).
