Biographical note
She studied at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, where she complete her degree in Romance Philology. She then left for Paris, to attend the École Pratique des Hautes Études, where she studied with Roland Barthes (co-supervisor of her doctorate) and Greimas, attending at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, classes of Todorov, Lacan and Kristeva. In 1966 she became professor of the Department of French Literature at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Lisbon, after which she taught Comparative Literature. In 1979 she completed her doctorate in French Literature. She was the director of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon during the 1996-98 term.
