PhD in Literary Studies at the University of Lisbon where she has been teaching since 1982. She lived in Macao from 1988 to 1992, having worked at the Macao Cultural Institute and the University of Macau from 1995 to 2002; She was the President of the Portuguese Institute of the East (Instituto Português do Oriente) from 1996 to 2002 and President of Camões – Institute of Cooperation and Language (Camões – Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua) between 2009 and 2017.
