Despite our repression, the past insists in re-emerging. The memory of the colonial war, the conflicts over a decolonization dubbed as “exemplary” or “disastrous” reveal, in the Portuguese case, that the wounds are still open, especially among those who have witnessed those events. The memories of the “retornados” emerge shyly, always within a controversial debate that seems far from over.

On the other hand, the younger generations not only feel nostalgia for a “África minha [my Africa]” but are also increasingly interested or critical toward the colonial past; they manifest their curiosity, a curiosity not merely intellectual, as it is crossed by memories and stories inherited from often opposed experiences that, despite everything, carry a more distanced look over those events. Given the fact that the grief stemming from that moment is far from silenced, it is vital to revisit the “founding” elements of the post-colonial, represented by the texts gathered in this work: varied proposals, and often contradictory, but each one of them actively anti-colonial.
