Title of the project: Bridging East and West: a critical chronology of published translations from Japanese into Portuguese (1543-2014)
Scholarship reference: SFRH/BPD/99430/2014
Start and end date: April, 2015 – March, 2018
Description
The present project seeks to build an annotated bibliography of translations, published either in book form or in periodicals, from Japanese into (European) Portuguese in the macro-period from 1543 (commonly accepted as the date when the Portuguese first arrived in Japan) to 2014. The centuries-old relationship between these countries has never been thoroughly studied from the viewpoint of translation. Hence, this chronology is a first attempt to map the history of translation practice and interactions between both systems. It seeks to build bridges of cultural, historical and literary understanding between Portugal and Japan through translation understood as image making and manipulation of cultural contact. It will allow to identify trends in the reception of Japanese literature and provide grounds for gauging translation flows and their impact on how knowledge about Japan has been disseminated in Portugal.
