Sexuality in the Antilles: diaspora, tragedy and subversion. A comparative study from an intersectional approach of oppression
Date: July 5, 2016
Time: 11:30
Venue: Room 3.1, School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon
Based on a comparative analysis of Junot Diaz (Dominican Republic/USA), Jamaica Kincaid (Antigua/USA) and Dany Laferrière (Haiti/Canada), a cultural study will be carried out from a feminist and decolonial point of view. The aim of this paper is to draw a partial, but trans-insular and trans-linguistic, literary map of the Antillean diaspora, addressing the question of sex understood as both “sexuality” and “sexual binary system”. The talk will examine an issue, sexuality, commonly associated to Caribbean reality, but not critically confronted. It will analyze how sex and sexuality are framed by the three authors. Furthermore, I will address how those elements operate in the diasporic context of each writer.
Activity organised by the research projects Comparing We’s (group CITCOM), and DIIA (group LOCUS).
