The Hermes Consortium for Literary and Cultural Studies is a collaboration of doctoral schools in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain with associated partners in Italy and USA.
Synapsis – European School for Comparative Studies
The School offers a different programme in the area of comparative studies on European literature, theatre, cinema and the arts, with the participation of leading scholars in the field. The aim is to create a framework that will lead to the development of a common culture in Europe, while respecting the integrity of national and local traditions, and to provide an opportunity for scholars and students from the various countries to cooperate and discuss problems of mutual concern.
Lace: Literature and Change in Europe
Defending a multilingual and cross-cultural approach that reflects the cooperation between institutions from diverse regions of Europe, and focusing on both continuities and discontinuities in European cultural history against the backdrop of exchanges with the ‘Tout-Monde’ (Edouard Glissant), a globalized world undergoing an intense process of cross-fertilization and creolization, LACE strives to document and analyse the ways in which the arts – broadly conceived – contribute to western culture’s self-reflection.
IWL (Institute of World Literature)
The Institute for World Literature (IWL) is created to explore the study of literature in a globalizing world. As we enter the twenty-first century, our understanding of “world literature” has expanded beyond the classic canon of European masterpieces and entered a far-reaching inquiry into the variety of the world’s literary cultures and their distinctive reflections and refractions of the political, economic, and religious forces sweeping the globe. With its headquarters at Harvard University and partners around the globe, The Institute for World Literature seeks to provide real training in world literature in global perspective. Meeting for four weeks each July, the Institute will be global in its presence as well as its intentions, rotating among different locations around the world, from Beijing to Harvard to Istanbul and beyond.
INCH – International Network for Comparative Studies
An international consortium that will provide faculty and graduate students a genuinely collaborative and interdisciplinary environment in which to pursue research. INCH is a research network that puts teaching at the center, not at the periphery of its institutional activities. It provides opportunities not just for established scholars but also for graduate students to pursue their research in an international context. Participating Universities: Princeton (head), Notre Dame (USA), Siena, Cambridge, Lisbon, Pisa, Geneva, Arezzo, UCLondon.
ACUME (Cultural Memory in European Countries. An Interdisciplinary Approach)
The European Thematic network ACUME includes five areas of research which enable to investigate the idea of ‘Cultural Memory’ from various perspectives. In detail: Cultural Amnesia, Bearing Witness, Places and Memory, Oral and written history, Foundation texts and mythology.

Playing Identities: Migration, Creolisation, Creation
This project aims to interpret migration phenomena as instances of creolisation. Creolisation is a specific mode of socio-cultural transformation connected with cultural encounter that leads to the construction of a new cultural identity. By forcing subjects to assume new unpredictable roles in complex social systems, creolisation enables a play of identities in which everybody becomes someone else, becomes the Other, and makes things become something else.

ELiCa (University and School for a European Literary Canon)
Defending the priority of a “European Literary Canon” in the construction of a “Europe of peoples” culturally sustained, ELiCa joins universities and secondary schools around the promotion of a literary debate which, in itself, opens boundaries, in its intention of reaching a broader public opinion, European and eventually not European. To understand and test how to go beyond national paradigms in order to relate them in a complementary and prospective activation of European literary memory, both in research and in teaching practice, is, then, the main objective of this project with Italian coordination, in the context of a European partnership including the following institutions: Università “La Sapienza” (Roma), CIID (Cooperativa Insegnanti di Iniziativa Democratica), Universitatea din Bucureşti, Universität zu Kiel, Centro de Estudos Comparatistas (FLUL), Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Language Service Centre (Giessen).

CHCI (Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes)
Established in 1988, the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes serves as a site for the discussion of issues germane to the fostering of crossdisciplinary activity and as a network for the circulation of information and the sharing of resources within the humanities and interpretative social sciences. CHCI has a membership of over 150 centers and institutes that are remarkably diverse in size and scope and are located in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, Korea, Finland, Taiwan, Ireland, United Kingdom, and other countries.
ECHIC-European Consortium for Humanities Institutes and Centres
The European Consortium of Humanities Institutes and Centres pursues a threefold purpose: to speak up on behalf of members in dialogues with ESF, EU and other funding and policy-making bodies to canvass the need for humanities research; to be able to speak on behalf of the humanities and develop a language for the (position of) humanities institutes in European universities today; to organize an annual humanities conference at a member institution, which would involve all the main partners, including funding and policy-making bodies at the European and the national levels; and to establish a network across the EU to lobby for the humanities in Europe today; to prepare collaborative projects and activities and set up an effective networking system with other international networks in the humanities, such as CHCI and others.
