She is a full professor of the University of Lisbon. Between 1999 and 2001 she was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities(UL) and between 2003 and 2005 she was the President of the Scientific Advisory Board of the FLUL. She was also the head of the Department of Portuguese (FL) between 2006 and 2012 and the head of the Department of Portuguese of the University of Macau between 2012 and 2016. She received her PhD in German Literature from the University of Lisbon in 1987 and was made a full professor in 1999. Since then she has dedicated herself to Comparative Studies, Translation Studies and Literatures in Portuguese.
