Angelo de Gubernatis (1840‐1913) is a key figure in Italian intellectual, cultural and political history of the second half of the nineteenth century. His correspondence, preserved in the National Library of Florence, includes letters exchanged with some of the most relevant Portuguese intellectuals of the time, such as Oliveira Martins, Teófilo Braga, Antero de Quental, Sampaio Bruno and the orientalists Vasconcelos Abreu and Cândido de Figueiredo.
